Pink eye or conjunctivitis is a very contagious disease that can either be caused by a virus or a bacterium. It is nothing pleasant to suffer of conjunctivitis and this is why many people are searching for effective home remedies for pink eye. Such remedies usually include all sorts of solutions or infusions made of plants that are used as eyewash or as compresses. Other home remedies for conjunctivitis include using certain substances as eye drops.

Chamomile is the most effective plant used in treating pink eye. Its flowers need to be boiled in water in order to make an infusion and then used as eye wash. The infusion can also be applied on the affected eye and kept there for 10-15 minutes. This procedure should be repeated every hour. Other people find it more comfortable to apply it on the eye with a cotton swab. Make sure you use a clean one each time, otherwise you could help viruses and bacteria replicate. If you don't have chamomile flowers, just buy tea bags that only contain this ingredient, moist them in water and apply them on the eye in the same manner you would have applied compresses. Don't use the same tea bag twice.

Other home remedies for pink eye include infusions made of Eyebright or of fennel seeds. If you don't have Eyebright, just use tincture and put a few drops in a glass of water. Fennel seeds need to be boiled for obtaining an effective infusion. They are helpful in reducing the pain and the inflammation. Compresses with warm milk are also considered a good home remedy for conjunctivitis, as well as compresses made of grated potatoes. Potatoes have astringent properties, but they need to be used for a couple of days until results become visible. Using aloe juice to wash the affected eye is said to also have great results.

Besides infusions or solutions, there are also substances that can be used as eye drops and they are perfect home remedies for pink eye. Honey, for instance is such a substance because it has antibacterial properties. It helps reduce the inflammation and also provides relief from the pain. The best thing you can do is to put one or two drops of honey directly in the affected eye. Dilute the honey with a little water if necessary. However, be aware of the fact that honey might cause a little discomfort. If you want to avoid it, dilute 3 tablespoons of honey into two cups of hot water, allow the liquid to cool and then wash your eyes with it.
