Tooth decay is a very serious condition and can result in many undesirable problems and health-related issues. While tooth decay may seem to be something that is lower on a list of health priorities, this is not the case. Tooth decay is a health issue that can lead to major health problems. However, tooth decay is also something that can be avoided entirely by taking a few precautionary measures. Essentially, there are two main causes of tooth decay. Either one of these can lead to serious problems both of them should be monitored and taken care of as soon as they appear. The two main causes of tooth decay are:

Plaque: Plaque is nothing more than what is referred to as a biofilm; a microscopic layer of materials, sediments, and organisms that form around the outer edge of our teeth. With time, plaque build-up can lead to the formation of tartar. Tartar is something that looks highly unattractive and can also cause problems such as bad breath and so on. Additionally tartar serves as an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and can lead to a weakening of your immune system as it allows more and more diseases to enter your body with ease.

Cavities: Dental cavities are one of the most serious health issues for all individuals but especially children. The most common cause of dental cavities is a diet that is high in sugar as well as poor dental hygiene. Dental cavities compromise the structural integrity of teeth in an irreparable manner. In severe cases, dental cavities can lead to diseases that result in fatalities. As with plaque, dental cavities can be avoided altogether by utilising proper hygiene methods and regulating one’s diet. However, dental cavities should be dealt with immediately if and when they occur.
